Building with less: structure as finish
1 min read
When structure is designed to be seen, it no longer needs to be covered. Exposed concrete, steel and timber can carry the building and finish the space at the same time.
Fewer layers, fewer failures
Every added layer of cladding, plaster or paint is another material to source, install and maintain. Removing layers that do not perform a function reduces cost and simplifies maintenance over the life of the building.
The approach demands more care early on: formwork, joints and connections must be designed and built to a standard that can be left on display.
