Designing shade as civic infrastructure
1 min read
In a hot climate, shade decides whether a street is used or avoided. Treating it as infrastructure, planned and maintained like lighting or drainage, changes how public space performs.
From afterthought to network
Canopies, colonnades, trees and building overhangs work best when they connect, so a person can move between destinations without long exposed stretches.
Planning shade at the masterplan stage costs less than adding it later, and it makes walking a practical choice for more of the year.
